Matteo Mastromarino is an Italian clarinetist based in Helsinki. He began his musical journey at the age of three with the Orff Method, taught by his father, Paolo. He started playing the clarinet at seven and graduated eight years later under the guidance of Antonio Tinelli. He further honed his skills with Alessandro Carbonare at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and earned a Master’s degree in Musical Interpretation under Romain Guyot at the Haute École de Musique de Genève.
During his studies, he was a member of the Italian Youth Orchestra and was selected by Riccardo Muti to join the Orchestra Luigi Cherubini. He has won several international competitions, including the Lisbon International Clarinet Competition, Malta Woodwind Competition, Marco Fiorindo International Clarinet Competition, Saverio Mercadante International Clarinet Competition, and Ciro Scarponi International Clarinet Competition.
In 2019, Matteo won the Principal Clarinet position at the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and later served as a part-time Clarinet Professor at the Turku University of Arts until 2022. In 2023, he won Principal Clarinet positions at both the Orchestra Regionale della Toscana and Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, opting to stay in Palermo for the 2023/2024 season before returning to Turku.
He has performed with renowned ensembles and orchestras, including Les Dissonances, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice, Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Torino, Orchestra Filarmonica di Torino, and Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico di Vicenza. Throughout his orchestral career, he has collaborated with esteemed artists such as Riccardo Muti, Fabio Luisi, Juraj Valchua, Nicholas Collon, Olli Mustonen, Evgeny Kissin, Julian Rachlin, and Maxim Emelyanychev, among others.
Matteo has played at prestigious festivals and venues, including the Ravello Festival, Ravenna Festival, Philharmonie de Paris, Philharmonie de Luxembourg, Auditorium del Lingotto of Turin, Victoria Hall de Genève, and Accademia Chigiana of Siena. As a soloist, he has performed with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Schloß Weißenstein Akademie Jugendorchester, and Magna Grecia Orchestra.
On June 22, 2016, he was recognized by Italian President of the Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini during the National Music Day. In June 2024, he won the Co-Principal Clarinet position at the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, a role he currently holds. Matteo is a Henri Selmer Paris Artist and plays on a set of Muse Clarinets. He is also a Silverstein Works Pro Team Artist and uses the Hexa and Cryo 4 ligatures.
