Sang Yoon Kim
South Korean clarinetist Sang Yoon Kim is known for his musical sensitivity, seamless tonal range and technical brilliance. At just 27-years-old, Mr. Kim won numerous international competitions including 1st prize at the 67th Prague Spring International clarinet competition, laureate of the Ghent International Clarinet Competition, 1st prize at the 2014 UNISA International flute & clarinet competition and 1st prize at the 2012 Jacques Lancelot International clarinet competition. As an active contemporary performer and admirator, he has received contemporary commissioned piece awards from both Prague and UNISA international competitions. Kim made his solo debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall performing the Copland Clarinet Concerto with the Colburn Orchestra under Los Angeles Philharmonic conducting fellow Deitrich Paredes in 2013. Also known as an active chamber musician, Mr. Kim has performed with renowned artists including members of the Ebene Quartet, clarinetist Martin Frost, pianists Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Robert Levin.
During the 2015-16 season, Mr. Kim will perform Mozart concerto as soloist with BBC Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Sakari Oramo’s conducting at the Prague International Spring Festival in May 2016. Mr. Kim had concerts tour in South Africa with Flutist Matvey Demin as winner tours of UNISA International competition, also featured as soloist with orchestras such as; Bruxelle Philharmonic Orchestra, Prime Philharmonic Orchestra and KwangJu Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Kim performed the Poulenc Clarinet Sonata with renowned pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet at The Colburn School’s Zipper Hall. Additional performances four concerts with the Deutsche Kammerorchester Berlin and Maestro Mateusz Moleda in Korea, an American Public Media national broadcast feature spot as Performance Today’s Young Artist-in-Residence including interviews with Fred Childs and performances taped in St. Paul, MN, and a national broadcast on the Korean Broadcast System featuring a performance of themes from Verdi’s La Traviatta arranged by Lovreglio. Mr. Kim’s previous engagements include debuts with the Orchestre Opera de Rouen Haute-Normandie, Mokpo Philharmonic Orchestra, Seongnam Philharmonic Orchestra, Pro Artibus Orchestra concert tour in Germany, Sinfonietta Paris, the Orchestre de Pantin, and the Orchestre de Conservatoire de Paris in a tour of Spain under conductor former Los Angeles Philharmonic Associate Conductor Lionel Bringuier. He has also appeared in numerous recitals and concerts in Paris, including performances at the Michelin House and the Korean Cultural Center.
Mr. Kim was the first Korean clarinetist to be accepted to the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris where he studied with Michel Arrignon and Pascal Moragues. Previously, he studied at the Conservatoire Nationale Region de Rueil-Malmaison for three years with Florent Heau. During this time he also studied chamber music with great performers such as Phillippe Bernold and Hae-sun Kang. Mr. Kim has pursued an Artist Diploma at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles under the tutelage of Yehuda Gilad.
