KWANGHOON YI
Korean clarinetist Kwanghoon Yi is the principal clarinetist of Richardson Symphony Orchestra and the coordinator of the Dallas Symphonic Festival Wind Division, Presented by the Dallas Music Teachers Association. His professional career was launched when he was named the First Prize winner of the 27th Dong-A Music Competition his college year. Following his graduation from Seoul National University, he has played as a Principal Clarinetist of the Buchoen Philharmonic Orchestra.
Yi maintains an active performing schedule. In demand as a concerto soloist, orchestra and ensemble he has appeared with include the Richardson Symphony, the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, the Aquinas Orchestra, the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, the Yonsei University Orchestra, the Indiana University Clarinet Choir, the Dallas Korean Chamber Orchestra and the Plano West Senior High School Band.
As an avid chamber musician, Yi was invited to perform for the series of chamber music concerts as a guest artist at the Garth Newel Music Center in Virginia, at the North Texas Seoul National University Alumni Association Music Festival and with the Liberace String Quartet at the University of North Texas. As an orchestra player, he was appeared in the Fort Wayne Symphony Orchestra, the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra and the Richardson Symphony Orchestra.
An accomplished teacher, Yi is also in demand as a master class clinician and lecturer on a variety of pedagogical topics. He has been invited as a guest performer for summer festivals such as the 2016 Lone Star Clarinet Camp and as a lecturer for the All State Auditions at the Flower Mound High School, Plano West Senior High School and others. His students have won numerous competitions in USA and abroad: the 1st ,2nd Prize winners and multiple finalists of the International Clarinet Association High School Competition, the 1st Prize winners of the Oklahoma University Clarinet Young Artist Competition, the Grand Prize winners of the Collin County Young Artist Competition, the Grand Prize winners of the Dallas Symphonic Festivals, the Grand Prize winner of the Lewisville Lake Symphony Young Artist Competition and the Grand Prize winner of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. His students have gone on to attend the finest universities in the USA including Eastman School of Music, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, San Francisco Conservatory, North Western University, Stanford University, Harvard University, University of Texas Butler School of Music, University of Illinois School of Music and University of North Texas College of Music.
Now residing Plano, Texas along with his wife Songyoung Kim, associate concertmaster at the Richardson Symphony Orchestra and an accomplished violinist, and his son Noah, at the age of 16 a brilliant clarinetist who is the 1st Prize winner of 2017 ICA High School Competition.
Yi’s clarinet teachers have been Kwangsul Ko, Kyu-Hyeong Lee, Howard Klug, Eli Eban, Alfred Prinz, and James Gillespie. Kwanghoon Yi holds a B.M. from Seoul National University College of Music and the Performer Diploma and Artist Diploma from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
Yi is the recording clarinetist of famous Korean song “Because I love you” by Korean singer Yoo Jae Ha.
